How To Keep Your Kitchen Organized

Are you tired of battling kitchen clutter every time you try to cook? Discover simple, practical ways to transform your kitchen into a functional and stress-free space you’ll love using every day!

Ah, the kitchen—the heart of the home, where meals are crafted, stories are shared, and the chaos of daily life tends to settle. It’s no wonder this space can quickly become a catch-all for clutter. From stray mail to mismatched containers, it doesn’t take long before your kitchen feels more overwhelming than inviting. I’ve been there myself, avoiding the kitchen because it just felt too chaotic to enjoy. But trust me, a well-organized kitchen isn’t just about making it look pretty. It’s about creating a space that brings calm, efficiency, and even a bit of joy to your daily routine.

Maintaining and organizing a kitchen isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s essential that efficiency, hygiene and peace of mind be the order of the day.

Declutter Regularly

One of the first steps towards having an organized kitchen is to make sure you are eliminating items you will no longer need. Over time kitchens accumulate a lot of gadgets and utensils as well.

You may even have appliances that you don’t use regularly that are broken. Make sure you set aside time every few months to go through your cabinets, countertops gathering anything that no longer serves a purpose to you.

This includes expired foods, cheap dishes, duplicate utensils and appliances that haven’t been used in the past year. Ask yourself these questions when you are decluttering your kitchen:

  • When was the last time I used this appliance?
  • Do I have something else that is going to serve the same purpose?
  • Is this gadget still in good working condition?

Letting go of unnecessary items is going to free up space and this is going to make it easier for you to organize the items that you do use regularly very neatly.

Here’s a helpful list of expiration tips for canned goods items:

Canned Goods

  • Check the ‘Best By’ Date: Most canned goods have a ‘best by’ date, which indicates when the product is at its peak quality. This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unsafe after this date, but flavors and textures may degrade..
  • Look for Signs of Spoilage: If a can is dented, bulging, rusted, or leaking, it’s best to discard it, as it could indicate contamination.
  • Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Canned goods last longer when stored in a cool, dry pantry. Avoid storing them near heat sources like stoves or sunlight, which can shorten their shelf life.
  • Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Canned goods last longer when stored in a cool, dry pantry. Avoid storing them near heat sources like stoves or sunlight, which can shorten their shelf life.
  • Rotation System: When buying new canned goods, place them behind the older ones to ensure you’re using the older stock first (FIFO: First In, First Out).

Designated Zones for Different Activities

Kitchen Zones

To keep your kitchen as functional as possible it’s a good idea to designate specific zones for the different tasks that you have to accomplish in the kitchen. This can include cooking, cleaning, storage and prepping zones.

In the prep zone you can put things such as mixing bowls, knives and cutting boards. In your cooking zone it’s a good idea to place utensils near the stove or oven as well as pots and pans. In your cleaning zone you can place dish soap, sponges and cleaning supplies as well. For your storage you can organize some pantry items in a dedicated cabinet or in pantry areas.

When you start grouping similar items and activities together you reduce the time you spend searching for tools as well as ingredients.

Use Clear Storage Containers

Investing in clear storage containers for your pantry items can help you to maintain a clean and well organized kitchen. When you use a transparent container it’s going to be easier to see what you have but this is going to reduce the chances you’re going to buy duplicates or run out of the essentials because you simply don’t know they are finishing.

SIDE NOTEInvesting in clear storage containers and organizers for your kitchen can make a world of difference in keeping things neat and accessible. When I was updating and organizing my own kitchen, I knew it could get pricey with all the bins, containers, and drawer organizers needed. So, I found another solution: MAC.Bid. It’s an online auction site where retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Lowe’s, and Home Depot sell their returns by the truckload, and bids start at just $1! I was able to score many items for as low as a dollar, and the most expensive purchase I made was $14 for an under-cabinet three-drawer metal slide-out. They have locations in PA, OH, SC, NC, and TX, and I saved hundreds of dollars with almost no effort. It was a total win for my kitchen organizing project!

Stackable containers also maximize the space in your drawers and in your cabinets as well. Be sure to label each container with the content and also the expiration date. This is especially good for items such as not spices and greens. Use baskets or bins in your pantry so that you can categorize food items such as baking supplies, candles and snacks. This is going to keep everything organized and easy for you to locate.

Establish a Cleaning Routine

Keeping a kitchen clean does take consistent effort, but establishing a solid cleaning routine makes all the difference. I’ve found that breaking it down into monthly, weekly, and daily tasks has helped me stay on top of things without feeling overwhelmed. For me, daily tidying is essential, and I’ve even enlisted the help of my Roomba—who I affectionately (or humorously) call Ivan the Terrible. He may have a fierce name, but he’s a total lifesaver when it comes to handling the floors! With Ivan’s help, I save so much time, and my kitchen stays in great shape. Establishing a routine really keeps the mess at bay and makes deep cleaning a breeze.

Daily Cleaning Tasks

Family cleaning

Make sure you wipe down the countertops and stove after every meal preparation that you have. Wash dishes before you go to bed at night. I use my dishwasher and I get it all set up once it’s fully loaded at 9 o’clock every evening. I set it to go off.  While my coffee is “Brewing” in the morning, I put the dishes away in their respective spots. Easy Peezy! Also, a good idea is to try  to remove crumbs and dust as quickly as possible .

Empty the trash if it’s full because this will help to prevent odors in the kitchen. To also help with time buy and use cleaning gadgets, they are relative inexpensive but oh what a time saver.  You could also use cleaning gadgets such as a coffee brush to help clean your coffee machine. It is small but mighty.

Utilize Drawer Organizers and Dividers

Drawers are one of the most notorious areas that become cluttered in the kitchen. This is especially true when it comes to utensils and kitchen tools.

You can invest in some drawers and organizers as they are going to help you to create designated spaces where you can put different items in your kitchen to keep things organized. Make sure you put all the similar tools together such as spatulas, and whisks, this way you can easily find them when you need them.

Conclusion

By tackling kitchen clutter, designating functional zones, and incorporating clear storage containers and drawer organizers, you can transform your kitchen into a well-organized, efficient space. Establishing a regular cleaning routine, with daily tasks and deep cleans, ensures your kitchen stays tidy and enjoyable to use. Personally, I found that even on a budget, there are creative ways to invest in organizational tools, like using MAC.Bid, to make the process affordable and stress-free. With a little effort and the right strategies in place, you’ll find that maintaining an organized kitchen is not only manageable but incredibly rewarding. Your kitchen will truly become the heart of your home—functional, inviting, and clutter-free!
