Here is a story about a little “Bling” for a very utilitarian item in our Kitchens…that “work horse” our Garbage Disposal. This all happened when the Kitchen was remodeled several months back.

What’s better than redoing your kitchen? I know I’m excited now to experience the joy of cooking after mine was redone. Besides, trying my brand-new Moen pushbutton garbage disposal is certainly something I could not wait to try out.

As I had mentioned in additional articles, my Niece, Vicky had her kitchen redone and had a Moen pushbutton garbage disposal installed.

I got  to see, first hand, that “Baby” in action.  I just had to have it. Did you ever see something and say the same thing?

When she heard I was doing my kitchen over she insisted that I get one like hers… another new-fangled invention. LOL. I must admit I was smitten with it. Once I learned how inexpensive it was and easy to install, it was a no-brainer.

So, I picked my model and quickly had it installed in my kitchen. I couldn’t wait any longer. Here is the one I chose and a little bit about it.

It is easy to mount and offers quick accessibility to turn on and off your disposal. It is a great product to add to any kitchen. I have no regrets after installing it, you can be sure of that.

Special Tips

Maintenance of Garbage Disposal

The garbage disposal under your sink needs some maintenance if you want it to do its job for years to come. I want mine to last, so I have a special way of making sure I clean and deodorize it regularly. With a few materials, the workforce under my sink is always fresh.

Materials needed:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Ice
  • Lemon
  • Sea Salt

Sharpening Disposal Blades

This recipe will help sharpen, clean and deodorize your garbage disposal. You don’t need to spend a fortune on any solution with a fancy name on the bottle. You can do a great job with the items you have in your home.

Sea Salt Coarse

I keep my disposal blades sharp all the time with only two things:

Start by putting the ice cubes in your drain and sprinkle the sea salt over them. Next, dump the ice and salt into the garbage disposal, only below the line where you’ll insert the sink plug.
Turn on the disposal and allow it to run until there are no more chopping noises.
Make sure to hold down the plug until you’re done. I do this to stop mine from popping out of there.

Fresh & Clean Disposal

For this part, here’s what I like to use:

Pour in the baking powder making sure you go all the way around the edges and the middle.

Pour in your white vinegar and it will begin to bubble. This will loosen up food and junk leftover in your disposal – we cannot see them but they’re there, believe me.

Let this solution suck for about 15 minutes until the fizzling starts to die down, and then run cold water washing it down the drain.

For a nice and fresh smell at the end, I tend to use lemon. I love how clean it all feels.

So, just cut a lemon in half. You can also leave the seeds intact. Then, put it in the disposal ½ at a time, turn on cold water and turn on garbage disposal simultaneously. And there you have it! A nice, lemony scent for your garbage disposal.

I loved writing this because it took me a while to get used to the maintenance routine for my garbage disposal. I hope my methods will make it easier for you to keep everything nice and clean.

As always, thank you so much for being a part of The City Cottage Family.
