Fashion: Best Trend Tips You Should Know
If you’ve ever wondered whether some of the fashion “rules” we grew up with still apply today, you’re not alone. I started researching current trends out of curiosity and quickly realized a lot has changed.
Lately I’ve been looking at my closet and realizing something… a lot of my clothes don’t quite fit the way they used to. Between some recent weight loss and everything going on with my health right now, I’m slowly figuring out what works for me again. And I’ll be honest with you—I am far from a fashionista.
Like many of you, I sometimes stand in my closet and think, what on earth should I wear today? Over the years I’ve even worked with a fashion stylist to help guide me a little, because putting outfits together has never been something that came naturally to me.
So recently I started doing what many of us do when we’re curious—I began looking online to see what’s actually considered fashionable right now. I browsed a bit through LTK, read a few articles, and paid attention to what people are wearing this year.
What I discovered was actually pretty interesting.
Fashion for 2026 seems to be moving in a direction I personally love—toward comfort, individuality, and letting go of some of the old “rules” we grew up with.
Always a Hat, Gloves, Suit, Nylons, and High Heels and Small Handbag (tucked inside was your best handkerchief). Those days are gone, and part of me misses it. How about you?
And I’ll admit something else… while reading about some of these trends I realized I’ve been guilty of quite a few of the so-called fashion “don’ts.” But that’s the beauty of style—there’s always room for change.
So I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learned along the way.
Why Fashion Feels Different Right Now
One thing that stood out to me while looking into current trends is that fashion seems to be shifting away from anything restrictive or uncomfortable. Instead, people are choosing clothing that feels good to wear and reflects their personality.
Honestly, that sounds like a step in the right direction to me.
It reminds me a lot of decorating a home. We’re not trying to impress anyone—we’re simply trying to create something that feels good to live in.
I’ve always believed style should feel the same way our homes do—comfortable, pretty, and easy to live in.
Trend 1: Skinny Jeans Aren’t the Only Option Anymore
For years it seemed like skinny jeans ruled the world. If you didn’t wear them, you almost felt out of style.
But what I’m noticing now is that relaxed denim, straight-leg styles, and wide-leg pants are everywhere. And honestly, they look comfortable—and flattering on many body types.
I don’t know about you, but I’m happy to see comfort making a comeback.
Trend 2: Accessories Are Having a Moment
Another thing I noticed while researching trends is that accessories are becoming a bigger part of personal style again.
Instead of relying on one statement piece, people are mixing things up a little more—layering jewelry, combining textures, and adding personality through scarves, handbags, and fun pieces. Sometimes a simple outfit can feel completely different just by changing the accessories.
Trend 3: The “Going Out Top” Isn’t As Important As It Used To Be
Remember when we all felt like we needed special tops just for going out to dinner? Maybe you don’t remember but this really was “a thing“.
Now it seems like people are leaning toward versatile pieces—simple tops that can be dressed up or down depending on the accessories you add.
That actually makes a lot of sense to me. I like clothing that can work for several different occasions.
Trend 2: Wearing Just One Statement Piece – Layer Up and Have Fun
Gone are the days of “just one statement piece per outfit.” If you love bold earrings, a chunky necklace, and a playful handbag, wear them together! Layering accessories is big this season. Mixing textures, colors, and shapes adds personality and makes your outfit uniquely yours. The only rule? If it makes you smile, go for it! I am still in the learning phase with this one….. I just have to let go of the old ways and embrace the NEW….
Trend 3: The Classic Going Out Top – Focus on Accessories Instead
You know those tops we used to buy for every “night out”? They’re collecting dust for a reason. The real game-changers are accessories. A simple tee or tank, elevated with funky jewelry, a bright scarf, or a cool belt, is way more versatile—and you get to wear it all day, not just at dinner!
Trend 4: Mixing Gold and Silver Jewelry
Who made up the rule that gold and silver can’t be friends? For years we were told not to mix metals. Gold with gold, silver with silver. But today? That rule has pretty much disappeared.
Mixing metals actually creates a layered, interesting look. And the best part is it means you can wear the pieces you love without worrying about matching everything perfectly.
Trend 5: Not Every Outfit Has to Be “Slimming”
This was one that really caught my attention.
Fashion is moving away from the idea that every outfit has to make you look slimmer. Instead, relaxed fits and comfortable silhouettes are becoming more popular. And honestly, confidence tends to look better than anything else.
If something feels good to wear, chances are you’ll look good wearing it.
Trend 6: The Capsule Wardrobe Idea
For a while the idea of a capsule wardrobe was everywhere—a small collection of neutral pieces that all match perfectly. I actually found that concept helpful at one point when I was trying to simplify getting dressed.
If you’ve ever shopped on Amazon, you’ve probably seen something similar. You click on a top and suddenly they show you several ways to style it with other pieces. That’s essentially the same idea—creating outfits that work together. Your own Personal Stylist.
What I’m noticing now is that people are loosening up a bit. Instead of sticking strictly to matching basics, many are adding a little more color and personality to their wardrobes.
But honestly, if a capsule wardrobe helps you get dressed without overthinking everything, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I still look, I still buy and I feel put together.
Sometimes simple systems make life easier.
Trend 7: Mixing Different Styles
Another fun shift I noticed is that people are mixing different styles more than before. You might see casual sneakers with dress pants or a structured jacket with relaxed jeans.
It reminds me a little of decorating—sometimes the most interesting spaces come from mixing different elements instead of matching everything perfectly.
Trend 8: Comfort Is Finally In
Loose sweaters, relaxed pants, and comfortable silhouettes seem to be everywhere this year. And while oversized pieces might not be everyone’s favorite, it’s refreshing to see fashion leaning toward comfort again.
At this stage of life, I think many of us appreciate clothing that allows us to move and live comfortably.
Trend 9: Better Basics
One small thing I noticed while reading about trends is that people are paying more attention to quality basics.
Things like good undergarments, comfortable socks, and well-made everyday pieces can make a big difference in how clothing feels.
You don’t have to spend a fortune, but sometimes upgrading simple basics makes your whole wardrobe feel better.
Trend 10: Personal Style Matters More Than Rules
If there’s one thing I took away from everything I read, it’s this:
Fashion today is much less about strict rules and much more about expressing yourself. If you like bold prints, wear them.
If you love simple neutral pieces, that works too.
Style should feel like an extension of who you are—not something stressful.
A Final Thought
Before I close, I want to say one more thing.
When I mentioned being skinny earlier in this post, I was speaking only about my own situation. Because of some health issues I’m currently dealing with, I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and am still trying to understand why.
But style and fashion should never be about size.
What really matters is feeling comfortable in your own skin and learning to appreciate the body you’re in—whatever that looks like.
And if we can do that while wearing something pretty, simple, and comfortable… I’d say that’s a good place to start.
