Has it been awhile since you and maybe a best friend or friends plural have gotten together. Well, Galentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to do that.
Galentine’s Day: A Celebration of Friendship
Forget the roses—February 13th is all about celebrating the incredible friendships that make life richer!
For the past three years, my best friend and I have honored Galentine’s Day with a tradition of dressing up, dining at a beautiful restaurant, and toasting to deep conversations, laughter, and the bond we cherish. This year will be no different!
Whether you’ve been celebrating for years or are just discovering the holiday, here’s everything you need to know about **Galentine’s Day**—where it started, how to celebrate, and why it’s for everyone.
What Is Galantine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day falls each year on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day. It’s an unofficial holiday dedicated to celebrating friendship, self-love, and the amazing people in our lives—regardless of relationship status.
The Origins of Galantine’s Day
The holiday was introduced by the sitcom Parks and Recreation.
– Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) first mentioned Galentine’s Day in the episode Galentine’s Day, which aired on February 11, 2010.
– Since then, the idea has taken off, becoming a beloved annual tradition for many.
Who Can Celebrate Galentine’s Day?
The beauty of Galentine’s Day is that it’s for everyone—single, married, dating, or somewhere in between. While it’s often associated with female friendships, it’s really about appreciating anyone in your life who lifts you up and supports you.
For some, Galentine’s Day is a way to counteract the pressure of Valentine’s Day, offering a reminder that love comes in many forms—not just romantic relationships.
How To Celebrate Galantine’s Day
There’s no right or wrong way to celebrate! Whether you prefer a big night out or a cozy gathering at home, here are some fun ways to honor your friendships:
Host a Brunch or Dinner Out
Make a reservation at a favorite restaurant, dress up, and enjoy a night of great food, deep conversations, and laughter. I have enjoyed this so much.
Pamper Yourselves
Treat your group to a spa day with facials, massages, or DIY self-care treatments at home with candles, face masks, and relaxing music.
Have A Movie Night
Pick a lineup of friendship-themed movies, grab some snacks, and make it a cozy night in. Here are a few of my FAVS:
Bridesmaids 😂
Thelma and Louise
Beaches
Nine to Five
SisterHood of the Traveling Pants
Organize A Gift Exchange
Exchange small but meaningful gifts—self-care items, beauty products, books, or even homemade treats.
My Friend, Marion and I exchange just little practical gifts. I get my all-time favorite. I love tea towels. So I always look forward to seeing what my new one will look like.
Host A Game or Craft Night
Break out the board games, trivia, or try a fun craft like making jewelry or decorating picture frames with favorite memories. I was on Pinterest and saw so many real cool crafting Galantine Party ideas. I especially like the Great ideas @findsforher.com
Check it out and all the other really fun looking craft ideas for a Gal Get Together.
If you can’t meet in person, host a virtual Galentine’s Day with a wine tasting, book swap, or group video chat.
I have to admit this is a new one on me, but it makes sense and I have so many really close friends all over the United States. I’m thinking about doing this. I’ll let you know how it comes out.
Try Something New
Step outside your comfort zone—go to a **cooking class, take a dance lesson, or face a fun challenge together. I would have to say my fun challenge was agreeing and going skydiving with my best friend Kim, who had already done it before. Was I scared, hell yeah. But it was the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life. I can only liken it to being as close to God here on earth. Would I do it again, yes.
Favorite Things Exchange
Each person brings two of their favorite small items, and everyone gets to go home with something new.
